Defiance City Schools was developing plans for a new middle / high school. But the community’s concern about the future of their existing school prompted city leaders to engage ATA Beilharz Architects. They wanted a practical and sympathetic vision for this important city landmark.
This project entailed the analysis and planning for adaptive reuse for the existing urban school campus. The buildings are of an ‘iconic’ educational aesthetic. Their rich detail provided the design palette for exterior modifications and site development and amenities.
The proposed strategy develops the campus into a mixed use urban city center that includes; city office space, community classroom / fitness center, a performing arts center, an artist and non-profit galleria, and a café. Exterior developments include a large open play field and landscaped courtyard anchored by a new bridge connector – clock tower.
